Owlet uses the same technology doctors and nurses have used for decades. It is that little red light they clip on your finger when you go to the hospital called pulse oximetry. Apple uses the same technology in their new smartwatch. It simply uses small LEDs, shining through the skin and sensing how much light makes it to the photo receptor. Pulse Oximetry is proven, safe and used all over the world.

We sound an alert if the heart rate dips too low or spikes too high. Our oxygen alert sounds if your child's oxygen saturation drops below 85% and stays below 85% for too long. Our alerts are a function of both the numeric value of the vital sign and the speed of change of that vital sign. This alert strategy was set by a team of pulse oximetry specialists, pediatricians, neonatologists and pulmonologists. However, Owlet is not a medical device. If your child has irregular heart rate or oxygen levels, it should not replace your prescribed monitoring system.
