Wearable sensors
New sensor systems that are easy to integrate with textiles and soft components are required in order to properly control and evaluate soft exosuits. Rigid exoskeletons usually include sensors such as encoders or potentiometers in robotic joints that accurately track joint angles, but these technologies are not compatible with soft structures. Our approach is to design new sensors to measure human kinematics and suit-human interaction forces that are robust, compliant, cost effective, and offer easy integration into wearable garments. In addition, we use other off the shelf sensor technologies (e.g. gyro, pressure sensor, IMU) that can be used to detect key events in the gait cycle. These wearable sensors can be used as part of the control strategy for the wearable robot or alternatively to monitor and record the movement of the wearer (when wearing the exosuit or as a standalone sensor suit) for tracking changes over time or determining what activities they are performing (e.g. walking vs running).

In this paper, we propose an easy-to-use and inexpensive system that facilitates 3-D articulated user-input using the hands. Our approach uses a single camera to track a hand wearing an ordinary cloth glove that is imprinted with a custom pattern. The pattern is designed to simplify the pose estimation problem, allowing us to employ a nearest-neighbor approach to track hands at interactive rates. We describe several proof-of-concept applications enabled by our system that we hope will provide a foundation for new interactions in modeling, animation control and augmented reality.

It’s called the Circret Smart Bracelet, and when finished, should be a wearable bracelet that can project a touch-controlled screen onto your arm. Unlike other technology-wearables, this creation could offer the most comprehensive use of your phone without even having to take it out of your pocket! So, let’s have a closer look… The Circret bracelet uses a Pico projector to project your mobile’s screen onto your forearm. It also features eight proximity sensors which the bracelet uses to detect your finger position, using it as a means to control feedback. With this, you can use your phone as you would normally, however you can leave the device itself in your bag or pocket. Appetite 'pacemaker' tells you when you're actually hungry
For some, the biggest challenge of reaching a healthy weight isn't adjusting their diet or getting more exercise -- it's resisting pangs of hunger when they've already eaten enough. They might have a better time resisting that urge after today, as the US Food and Drug Administration has approved a first-of-its-kind appetite controlling device, EnteroMedics' Maestro Rechargeable System. Think of it as a pacemaker for your stomach. The device sits just under your abdomen and sends electrical pulses that both block hunger signals and send fullness signals more often. In theory, you'll lose weight simply because you have a better sense of when to stop.
Don't be too quick to ask your doctor about getting one, though. For one thing, the jury's still out on how well it works. People with a test Maestro only lost 8.5 percent more excess weight in a year than people who had dummy units, and the FDA wants EnteroMedics to conduct a five-year study to see if its claims match reality in the long run. Also, your health insurance probably won't cover this -- you'll likely have to pay for the device and surgery. If Maestro does work as promised, though, it could be a lifesaver for anyone whose weight issues are normally out of their control.

In the US, child obesity is an ever-growing concern that's desperately in need of a remedy. Knowing this, Adidas is now looking to help the cause and, in the process, make it fun for young people to get fit. The sporting gear company has teamed up with Interactive Health Technologies (whose mission is "empowering individuals to self-manage their health") to bring its miCoach technology to schools Stateside. A few years ago, IHT began implementing a heart rate monitoring system for gym classes in the US, and now Adidas wants to take that initiative one step further. By combining miCoach's activity tracking with IHT's heart rate system, Adidas believes it can get students to motivate themselves.
At the moment, there are more than 700 schools in the US have added this to their curriculum, with over 250,000 students benefitting from it every day. An Adidas spokesperson said the reception to the heart monitoring system, in tandem with certain miCoach features, has been great -- so much so that many students choose to take the IHT wearable device home with them on the weekends. (Though, how long that habit will last remains to be seen.) And that's a good thing, since it means they keep racking up points and staying active even when away from the school gymnasium. Both parents and teachers can monitor each student's app via a companion application, which is available for PC and and mobile devices. Ultimately, Adidas says the goal is to continue expanding to additional school districts, adding that it's constantly working to add interesting things to the program -- such as rewards and social challenges between schools. Because now you don't just play games in gym, PE is a game in and of itself.
